Bible Study Tips

There are four primary steps to Bible Study:
1. Look at what it says, or does not say.
2. Examine the context.
3. Look for the eternal truth.
4. Apply it to our lives.

The reason some people can get more from the Bible is that they've learned to look and listen to what it says. Many times we miss what's being said or add words that change the meaning. We need to slow down, even with passages we think we know, and we need to see what it's actually saying.

Without context I can make the Bible say anything I want it to say. This is the danger that we have all fallen into… we often miss the context. Because we miss the context, we end up believing, teaching, and acting upon things the Bible never intended for us to believe or do.

If the truth we believe we found is not eternal then it is not Biblical truth. If the doctrine we try to essablish works mainly in America but does not work in China that is not a Biblical doctrine. We must make sure we find the eternal truth that flows to any generation in any country.

We often go to Scripture and try to apply it without following the first three steps. We need to make sure we see what it's saying in it's context and build a eternal truth and then, and only then, apply it to our lives.

In the last study, I made a comment that Old Testament narratives are God-centered. I want to clarify this... ALL SCRIPTURE is God-centered.

About 40% of the Old Testament is a variety of stories. The following books are Old Testament Narratives: Genesis, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings, 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Daniel, Jonah, and Haggai.

There's a variety of stories and characters and a variety of challenges. There's Abraham arguing with God on how many righteous people it's going t take to spare a city.
