BY HIS STRIPES...

I was raised in, and spent much time in what people call the “name it and claim it” arena. I’ve often heard the “by His stripes we are healed” scripture used to demand healing. This passage of Holy Scripture has been taken completely out of context and off subject. Because of this error, the Creator looks weak to satan and looks like a liar. IF, as they claim, we WERE healed, then we would NEVER get sick because our God does not lie and is much more powerful than Satan. So, what is being said in this Biblical statement?

In Isaiah 53, we are reading that His wounds are for transgression, His bruises for immoral behavior (iniquity); therefore, by His stripes we are healed. The healing is not talking about a physical healing of sicknesses but a spiritual healing of our sinful condition. This passage is repeated again in 1 Peter 2 who expounded upon the statement saying, “when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed”. Nothing Peter said was in relationship to a physical sickness.

“By His stripe we were healed” is not about physical sickness, but rather that we were spiritually sick in sin. By the suffering of Christ, His righteous covers over our past and restores us to new. We then walk in our newness with Him, being born again into a new life that is contrary to the one which made us sick.
