Colossians 2 in context:
Blotting out the HANDWRITING OF ORDINANCES that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross (Colossians 2:14) Let no man therefore judge you... (Colossians 2:16) which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ (Colossians 2:17)

TABERNACLE SYSTEM AND THE CEREMONIAL LAW POINTING TO CHRIST

When Jesus explained to His disciples about Himself, and why He had to suffer, using scripture, I fully believe He explained the temple system in detail.

Luke 24:26-27
Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

1 Corinthians 5:7
Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

Hebrews 4:14
Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

Hebrews 8:1-2
Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;  A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

Exodus 25:8
And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.

What did God expect them to learn from the sanctuary?
Psalms 77:13
Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary:

Sanctuary, Temple, Tabernacle is mentioned over 300 times in the Bible.

Exodus 25:40
And look that thou make them after their pattern, which was shewed thee in the mount.

Hebrews 8:5
Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

golden angels on each side of the mercy seat
God have golden angels or real ones?
carvings of angels in the walls of the holy of holies
God have carvings or legions of real angels in his presence?

The earthy tabernacle was a copy of THE HEAVENLY SACTUARY.
Hebrews 9:8
...the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:

High priest could not enter the chamber until a sacrifice was made
Jesus could not have entered into the chamber until He came to earth; a sacrifice made.

The lamb represents Christ at the beginning of His ministry; the ram represents Christ at the end of His ministry. The Bible tells us that Jesus entered, not with the blood of sheep and goats but with His own precious blood; therefore He had to first shed His blood before entering into the first chamber.
Tabernacle pitched in the midst of the people

Numbers 1:51-53
And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down: and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death. And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, throughout their hosts. But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony.

Jesus in the midst of His people
John 1:14
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

FLOOR PLAN OF THE TABERNACLE

THREE PARTS

What do the three parts of the tabernacle represent?
courtyard = justification
holy place = sanctification
holy of holies = glorification
FRONT GATE
There was one outer gate which had a covering with four colors in it:
Purple - Royalty
Red - Sacrifice
Blue - Obedience
White - Righteousness
= Christ

If you want to have purple, you must mix RED and BLUE.
Sacrifice and Obedience makes for royalty.

There was just one entry way into the Holy of Holies

There is only one door by the way we may be saved; which is JESUS.
Jesus said I am the way; no one may enter in except by Me. There is only one door by the way we may be saved; which is Jesus.
We are separated from God by sin
Idea of salvation is, “we are trying to get back to God”

THE COURT
The court represents the earth.
The gate, the door, and the veil represents the three dimensions of Christ’s ministry.
There are four pillars for the veil, four coverings, four colors, four ingredients in the shew bread. Four is the number of the earth (north, south, east, and west: four corners)
boards and pillars on sockets of silver and overlaid in gold (made from redemption money)
1 Corinthians 3:11
For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ

As soon as you came in through the front gate you were confronted with the alter of burnt offering;
Exodus 27:1-8
And thou shalt make an altar of shittim wood, five cubits long, and five cubits broad; the altar shall be foursquare: and the height thereof shall be three cubits. And thou shalt make the horns of it upon the four corners thereof: his horns shall be of the same: and thou shalt overlay it with brass. And thou shalt make his pans to receive his ashes, and his shovels, and his basons, and his fleshhooks, and his firepans: all the vessels thereof thou shalt make of brass. And thou shalt make for it a grate of network of brass; and upon the net shalt thou make four brasen rings in the four corners thereof. And thou shalt put it under the compass of the altar beneath, that the net may be even to the midst of the altar. And thou shalt make staves for the altar, staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with brass.

which is the sacrifice that represents Christ.
John 1:29
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
Hebrews 9:24
For Christ is not entered into the holy place made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.
ALTER OF BURNT OFFERING
The sacrifice and Lamb represents the CROSS and JESUS.
The first thing we must do toward salvation is come to the alter.

Leviticus 4:27-31
And if any one ... sin through ignorance, while he doeth somewhat against any of the commandments of the LORD... then he shall bring his offering, And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin offering, and slay the sin offering... and the priest shall make an atonement for him, and it shall be forgiven him.
Jewish Encyclopedia
The laying of the hands upon the victim’s head is an ordinary rite by which the substitution and the transfer of sins are affected. In every sacrifice there is the idea of substitution; the victim takes the place of the human sinner.

What is the penalty for sin?
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death

Lamb was killed
the death meant for sin

Hebrews 9:22
And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

Matthew 26:28
or this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

How would you feel to kill a little lamb every time you sinned?
How much more should it move us with Christ?

Became a ritual among the jews

Hebrews 6:6
If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

The fat = symbol for sin
removed and burnt = symbol of the purging of that sin.
Leviticus 3:3
And he shall offer of the sacrifice of the peace offering an offering made by fire unto the Lord; the fat that covereth the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards,
Psalms 37:20
But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the Lord shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away

YOU had to sacrifice the lamb. You had to see your part; so you had to put the lamb to death.

John 1:29
Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

While the lamb had to be killed each time for our sin, Jesus came and died once; the perfect blood of our creator.
Hebrews 9:28
So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many;

Hebrews 10:17-20
...And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

The high priest of the tabernacle represents JESUS.
Once all sacrifices were complete
blood was taken by the priest, who represented Jesus
Hebrews 3:1
Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;,

blood taken into the sanctuary and sprinkled before the veil which separated the two rooms.
The presence of God dwelt on the other side of the veil.
Represents the sins transferred to the sanctuary

After Jesus died on the cross as our sacrifice for sin, He arose and went to heaven as our Priest to minister His blood in the heavenly sanctuary
Hebrews 9:11-12.
But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

The blood ministered by the earthly priest represents Jesus applying His blood to our record of sins in the sanctuary above, showing that they are forgiven when we confess them in His name
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

The bronze laver represents our BAPTISM.
From the Alter, our next piece of furniture on the journey is baptism.

Children of God in Egypt
Slaves
sacrifice lamb (Passover) = court yard
wilderness = holy place
promised land = most holy place
After the sacrifice and before the wilderness they had to go through the red sea
1 Corinthians 10:1-2
I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;  2And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

The bronze laver was located between the alter and the entrance to the temple. Here the priest would wash their hands and feet before offering a sacrifice or entering the temple.
Exodus 30:18-21
Thou shalt also make a laver of brass, and his foot also of brass, to wash withal: and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and thou shalt put water therein. For Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet thereat: When they go into the tabernacle of the congregation, they shall wash with water, that they die not; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn offering made by fire unto the Lord: So they shall wash their hands and their feet, that they die not: and it shall be a statute for ever to them, even to him and to his seed throughout their generations.

Like baptism, the bronze laver represents the washing of sin.
Titus 3:5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

Continuously burning with pure olive oil
oil represents the Spirit

There was a seven branched candlestick located in the first room.
Exodus 25:31-40
And thou shalt make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work shall the candlestick be made: his shaft, and his branches, his bowls, his knops, and his flowers, shall be of the same. And six branches shall come out of the sides of it; three branches of the candlestick out of the one side, and three branches of the candlestick out of the other side: Three bowls made like unto almonds, with a knop and a flower in one branch; and three bowls made like almonds in the other branch, with a knop and a flower: so in the six branches that come out of the candlestick. And in the candlesticks shall be four bowls made like unto almonds, with their knops and their flowers. And there shall be a knop under two branches of the same, and a knop under two branches of the same, and a knop under two branches of the same, according to the six branches that proceed out of the candlestick. Their knops and their branches shall be of the same: all it shall be one beaten work of pure gold. And thou shalt make the seven lamps thereof: and they shall light the lamps thereof, that they may give light over against it. And the tongs thereof, and the snuffdishes thereof, shall be of pure gold. Of a talent of pure gold shall he make it, with all these vessels. And look that thou make them after their pattern, which was shewed thee in the mount.

The light, in the sanctuary stayed burning. The light is the representation of Jesus.
John 8:12
I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

ALTER OF INCENSE
Stacks Image 6
In the first room was also an alter to which incense was burnt.
Exodus 30:7-8
And Aaron shall burn thereon sweet incense every morning: when he dresseth the lamps, he shall burn incense upon it. And when Aaron lighteth the lamps at even, he shall burn incense upon it, a perpetual incense before the Lord throughout your generations.

The alter of incense represents the PRAYERS of the people.
Revelation 8:4
And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel’s hand.

SHEWBREAD
Stacks Image 7
12 loaves - one for each of the twelve tribes

The 12 loaves of shewbread represents the BREAD OF LIFE.

There was a table of Shewbread:
Exodus 25:23-30
Thou shalt also make a table of shittim wood: two cubits shall be the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof. And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, and make thereto a crown of gold round about. And thou shalt make unto it a border of an hand breadth round about, and thou shalt make a golden crown to the border thereof round about. And thou shalt make for it four rings of gold, and put the rings in the four corners that are on the four feet thereof. Over against the border shall the rings be for places of the staves to bear the table. And thou shalt make the staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold, that the table may be borne with them. And thou shalt make the dishes thereof, and spoons thereof, and covers thereof, and bowls thereof, to cover withal: of pure gold shalt thou make them. And thou shalt set upon the table shewbread before me alway.

The shewbread was a symbol of Christ’s body.
Jesus = word of God
John 6:51
I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

Hebrews 9:6
Now when these things were thus ordained, the priest went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God.
This first section represents our daily commitment to Christ; partaking of the Word, partaking of the life, living the life in Christ, and it contains the record of all confessed sins.
Hebrews 9:11-12
But Christ being come as High Priest... by his own blood He entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Three things in the holy place represent the personal devotion of a christian:
Bread = Reading the Word
Alter of Incense = Pray
Lamp = Let your light shine

ARK OF THE COVENANT
Stacks Image 8
The Ark of the Covenant was the only piece of furniture which was in the Most Holy.
Exodus 25:10-22
And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof. And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, within and without shalt thou overlay it, and shalt make upon it a crown of gold round about. And thou shalt cast four rings of gold for it, and put them in the four corners thereof; and two rings shall be in the one side of it, and two rings in the other side of it. And thou shalt make staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold. And thou shalt put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark, that the ark may be borne with them. The staves shall be in the rings of the ark: they shall not be taken from it. And thou shalt put into the ark the testimony which I shall give thee. And thou shalt make a mercy seat of pure gold: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof. And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat. And make one cherub on the one end, and the other cherub on the other end: even of the mercy seat shall ye make the cherubims on the two ends thereof. And the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and their faces shall look one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubims be. And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee. And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.

The mercy seat, as mentioned earlier, was on top of the Ark, which sat between two cherubim.
Exodus 25:17-22

The Ten Commandments, which God wrote on tables of stone with His own finger, and which His people will always obey
Revelation 14:12
Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.,

were inside the ark
Deuteronomy 10:4 - 5
And he wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten commandments, which the Lord spake unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly: and the Lord gave them unto me. And I turned myself and came down from the mount, and put the tables in the ark which I had made; and there they be, as the Lord commanded me.
This put the mercy seat above them, which signified that as long as God's people confessed and forsook sin
Proverbs 28:13,
He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

mercy would be extended to them through the blood which was sprinkled on the mercy seat by the priest
Leviticus 16:15, 16.
Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat: And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.

The blood of the animal represents Jesus' blood that was shed for us to bring us forgiveness of sin
Matthew 26:28
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Hebrews 9:22
And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

Day of Atonement
Once each year, on the day of atonement, a solemn day of judgment took place in Israel
Leviticus 23:27
Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord.

All were to confess every sin or they were cut off forever from the camp of Israel
Leviticus 23:29
For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people.

Two goats were selected: One, the Lord's goat; the other, the scapegoat, representing Satan
Leviticus 16:8
And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the Lord, and the other lot for the scapegoat.

The Lord's goat was slain and offered for the sins of the people
Leviticus 16:9
And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the Lord's lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering.

But on this day the blood was taken into the most holy place and sprinkled upon and before the mercy seat
Leviticus 16:14
And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times.

Only on this special judgment day did the high priest enter the most holy place to meet God at the mercy seat.
Hebrews 9:7
Into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood.

The sprinkled blood (representing Jesus' sacrifice) was accepted by God, and the confessed sins of the people were transferred from the sanctuary to the high priest. He then transferred these confessed sins to the scapegoat, which was led into the wilderness
Leviticus 16:16, 20-22
And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness... And when he hath made an end of reconciling the holy place, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar, he shall bring the live goat: And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness: And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness.

In this manner, the sanctuary was cleansed of the sins of the people, which had been transferred there by the blood sprinkled before the veil and had been accumulating for a year
Leviticus 16:19
He shall sprinkle of the blood... seven times and cleanse it, and hallow it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel.
Leviticus 16:16
And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.
Leviticus 16:30
For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.

Sanctuary Language
The sanctuary, items involved, sacrificing, and even the day of atonement are all important because they pointed to the Heavenly High Priest, the Heavenly Sanctuary, and the actual events going on in the Heavenly Sanctuary for the salvation of our sins today.
Hebrews 9:23
It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

The sanctuary language is also important because it tells us at what stage we are at in Revelation.

The special judgment day of atonement is known as Israel's Yom Kippur, which foreshadowed the final atonement to be made for planet Earth. From the yearly type of the ancient day of atonement, all of humanity is assured that our faithful High Priest, Jesus, still mediates in heaven for His people and stands ready to blot out the sins of all who will exercise faith in His shed blood. The final atonement leads to the final judgment, which settles the sin question in the life of every individual.
